Masculine Adverts

Masculine Adverts

Cambridge dictionary’s defines Masculine as:

‘masculine (MALE) adjective- having characteristics that are traditionally thought to be typical of or suitable for men:a masculine appearance/voice’

Guinness Surfer Ad

http://www.framestore-cfc.com/commercials/guinness_surfer/pop_surfer.html

I thought that this advert represents masculinity quite well - the whole video is based around men surfing and you actually don’t see a single woman in the whole video. The point of the story seems to be Survival, from the Horses that are chasing them which seems to be quite a male orientated activity. There is a Deep Male commentary on the video too that makes it seem a bit like a Sport (another stereotypical Male activity). The video is in Black and white which makes it quite bold and one thing that the Black and white made me think of, was the past where Women had less power and there was always the idea of ‘the man of the house’.

Tetley’s (Beer)

Tetley’s is quite a male based beverage and this is mostly apparent with the packaging that shows the logo on a shape of a Rugby ball. Rugby is considered to be one of the most masculine Sports as it’s Rough, Dirty and Violent which in olden times is thought to be the things that the male species enjoys. I guess Beer is just stereotypically considered to be a male drink as it’s bitter and not particuarly sweet for woman (like the saying Sugars, Spice and all things nice for girls).

Zoo (Magazine)

Zoo is obviously a Masculine magazine as it is about stereotypical male activities such as Football, racing and of course – naked ladies. The fact that it has a half naked woman on the front is considered to be quite offensive to the feminine species but based on Testosterone, I doubt many men would be offended by a picture like this. The inside of the magazines talk about women in a stereotypical way of doing all the house jobs and for sexual pleasures which I don’t think many women would want to read about.

Pantera (Music)

All of Pantera’s album artwork is aimed towards a masculine audience. Their designs are based upon death, anger, wrath and just use a lot of dark colours and distortion on the band’s logo. The band always carries a feeling that they’re just pure ‘Heavy Metal’ and that they don’t take any rubbish from anyone. Although there are many female Pantera fans, most of their music seems to be aimed towards men and in many Live tracks, Phil the lead singer would urge people to go out and ‘get laid, high and all of that good shit’.

Max Power (Magazine)

Max power is a definitive Masculine advert – it’s obvious from the cover which is mostly showing a big, bold car and then in the bottom left hand corner, a partly naked woman. The front cover is in blue and silver – two colours which are frequently defined with men. Max Power talks about cars in a customising way on how to get the cars to go as fast as possible and to catch girls attention.
