As anyone who knows me very well will tell you, I have a sick mind. I can't get enough of the Horror genre and I've been addicted to it since I first experienced it with the Resident Evil Series about 10 years ago. So it's not really a big surprise to know that I'm possibly one of the biggest Saw fans either. After being blown away by the amazingly orignal Saw and then being stuck to the series with the impressive Saw 2 and 3, I've been counting the days for Saw 4 ever since I saw the confirmed date of 26th October. This has been the first time I've ever seen a film on release day, the first 18 film I've seen at a cinema, the first film I've pre-booked tickets for and the first film that I had to cycle 8 miles and run a mile in 7 minutes to watch. So as you can probably tell, I had VERY high hopes for this film. Unfortunately, I don't get everything I want.
*Spoiler Alert!*
Well I definitely have to say that Saw 4 probably has the most gory introduction and the first film to nearly make me puke after about 5 mins in, after seeing Jigsaw's deceased body being sliced up to lead to the introduction of the story. It's a shame that this is really the only part of the film that had me excited and actually understanding what was going on. The film is based upon Officer Rigg going through a set of traps to try and rescue people involved in Jigsaw's twisted games and just like in Saw 3, the Detective isn't really involved in the traps, but more about being taught a lesson. Here is where the first major fault starts to show - Jigsaw is devoted to making people complete his Traps so that they can appreciate their lives and always says that he is not a murderer, so then why do innocent people continously die throughout this film, especially without a chance to show signs of the Survival Instinct?
The rest of the film just seems to pad out a very confused and disappointing storyline, finishing parts of the story that were never completely solved, but still not very exciting. Sure, I enjoyed seeing some new traps, bloodshed and a 'new' storyline but the film didn't deliver what I personally wanted to see - all the interesting loose ends that the hardcore fans are dying to be resolved. What really happened to Dr. Lawrence Gordon and did he change since passing Jigsaw's test? What happened to Daniel Matthews from Saw II, he was last seen in the safe at the end of the film, but nothing is EVER shown after that event. And the main thing that wasn't confirmed that I think people were expecting after the dramatic ending of Saw 3 is, what's happened to Jeff's daughter, especially now that he died after his ridiculous 2 minute appearance and demise in Saw 4. I guess all these questions will get explained in the Cash Cow Saw 5 and 6 which have apparantly been confirmed, but it disappoints me to a stage of nearly crying on how they could've ended the series at a Quintology with Saw IV rather than making a very disappointing sequel which to me, feels really irrelevant to the rest of the storyline especially with me being even more confused about the series storyline with the possibility of Officer Rigg being dead (which again, isn't confirmed) and the idea that Detective Hoffman is actually an associate to Jigsaw, with it not explaining why he is, with the predictable twist at the end.
Again, it really is a crying shame to see the film go to such disappointing lengths and I'm just hoping that maybe I'm just very confused and missed out something, but I really don't think that's possible as my friends will tell you as my eyes never left the screen for the whole depressing 108 minutes. No doubt I'll end up seeing Saw 5 and future sequels, as it's enivitable with me always being such a dedicated fan, but after such anticipation, I just really wish today was a very bad nightmare.
